Richard Denchfield

Founder

Richard founded Olde Tradition Spice in 1994 with a simple mission: to create an all-natural mulling spice that people could feel good about. Over the years, he has built strong relationships with apple orchards, wineries, and farm markets, always taking the time to know each customer personally. Today, Richard remains involved in the business, enjoying every chance to connect with long-time customers, many of whom have become like family. In 2023, Richard stepped down to take a more passive role in the business, however his commitment to quality and his personal touch continues to be at the heart of everything we do here at Olde Tradition Spice.

From handing out samples at trade shows in the first grade, to visiting customers across the country, this business has always been a huge part of my life. In 2023, I officially took on the role of president, and while my dad still loves connecting with long-time customers, I’m excited to bring fresh ideas to the table. We’ve always prided ourselves on offering more than just a product — we’re about building relationships and delivering top-notch service.   Can't beat this, come wintertime
I first tried a box of this 20 some years ago. My wife and I picked up a box as a souvenir at a place in Sevierville, Tennessee, called the Apple Barn. They made homemade cider, had a great reataraunt and big souvenir shop. Anyhoo, I was a trucker for many years and finally retired. Last winter it got pretty cold here, and I found this box in my cabinet. Went to the store, bought couple gallons of cider, and enjoyed mulled spiced cider the rest of the winter to warm my tired old body. Tried to find some more but it was no longer $4.95. Now it is $14.95.Yikes! So I put it on my wishlist and recently it got a price slash. So, I bought 2 boxes at $11.90 each. Still high but I saved 6 bucks. These should last me maybe 5 years. I'm frugal. Anyway, about the spice itself, it's the perfect blent of cinnamon, orange, clove, allspice and pure orange oil. Need to clear up stuffy nose! Add a couple drops tobasco sauce to the tea. Your sinuses will thank you afterwards. This is great for a cold day or evening, it's smell is remembrance of Christmas.

  Tasty, convenient, BUT could use more cinnamon
I use these to spice up decaf tea at night and for beer/mead brewing and they work really well. The tea bags make it super convenient, especially for brewing. My only complaint is they could use more cinnamon, so I do have throw in a cinnamon stick.

  Great alternative to tea
I'm partial to cinnamon and the spices that typically accompany it, but I find cider to be too sweet and have difficulty finding decaf, spiced tea. This is my solution to that - I steep it directly in hot water - my preparation is a ~5 minute steep of one sachet in 10oz of about 190F water - and end up with a very mild, aromatic beverage. It is a good choice if you want something light on waking up or before going to bed, or are looking to shake up your usual beverage routine with something which has nothing to do with tea. You can also add it to tea, or coffee or hot cocoa, and it adds an authentic mulled flavor to any of them. It'd probably be nice in hot milk, though I haven't tried that yet.So anyway, I'd recommend it, at least to try. Maybe it won't replace your usual drink of choice entirely, but it's a nice compliment anyway.
